Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One will explore Ethan Hunt’s mysterious past before the IMF, director Christopher McQuarrie reveals.
Dead Reckoning Part One, the first half of the projected two-part conclusion, reintroduces Tom Cruise‘s IMF agent Ethan Hunt to save the planet once more. This time, he’ll be threatened by a ghost from his past, the film’s main adversary, Esai Morales.
The Mission: Impossible franchise has yet to address any significant element of Ethan’s backstory in six films since 1996, but that is poised to change in the upcoming edition.
Director Christopher McQuarrie revealed in a recent interview with Empire ahead of the release of Mission: Impossible 7 this summer that the film will examine Ethan’s past for the first time.
McQuarrie, who has helmed four films in the series, said that the villain in Dead Reckoning Part One allowed them to explore portions of Ethan’s murky past before the IMF. The director also reveals the name of the villain, Gabriel, which has some relevance.

Dead Reckoning is a Mission: Impossible chapter. Part One, which would focus on Ethan’s life before the IMF, would be a first for the franchise, given his past has yet to be thoroughly addressed in the six prior films.

McQuarrie’s remark that Gabriel “knew Ethan before Ethan was Ethan” appears to confirm a long-held idea that Ethan Hunt is an alias he uses for his life as an IMF officer. Almost nothing is known about his early career before joining the IMF, thus the franchise will be pulling back the curtain in that sense.
In a recent interview, director Christopher McQuarrie teased that the name “Gabriel” has a significant meaning in the upcoming film Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One. He also hinted that there is a connection between Ethan Hunt and Gabriel, but he is keeping the details under wraps.
This has led to speculation among fans about who Gabriel could be and what his role in the film will be. Some have suggested that he could be a new villain, while others believe that he could be an old enemy of Ethan’s who has come back for revenge.

The name “Gabriel” is significant in Christian mythology. He is the archangel who announced the birth of Jesus Christ to Mary. This suggests that Gabriel could be a powerful figure in the film, and that he could pose a serious threat to Ethan Hunt.
However, it is also possible that Gabriel is not a villain at all. He could be an ally of Ethan’s who is helping him to stop the real threat. Only time will tell who Gabriel is and what his role in the film will be.
What do you think? Who do you think Gabriel is?
